·        Bay Transit

Bay Transit operates in 12 counties as a public transit, door to door model. To obtain a ride an individual needs to call at least 24 hours in advance, but it’s best to call 3 days ahead. Bay Transit operates Monday through Friday from 6 am to 6 pm. Advice from Bay Transit officials is, if possible, try to schedule your rides between the hours of 10-2 daily as these are off-peak hours and you have a much higher chance of getting a ride. Bay Aging provides 300-400 trips per month for Mathews. Call 877-869-6046 for rides. $2 per boarding.

·        Bay Transit New Freedom

Bay Aging also operates a relatively new taxi type service for Seniors (60+) and those with disabilities (defined broadly). The service covers needs outside regular service hours and needs outside the normal service area. For example, this provides rides to Newport News and Richmond. As an example, veterans can use this service to go to the VA. Rides cost $5 for 50 miles or less and $10 beyond that, round trip. Individuals need to call at least 3 days ahead to get on the schedule. There is no income requirement. The current funding limits individuals to 2 or 3 rides per month. Call 877-869-6046 for rides.

Federal regulations say that Medicaid beneficiaries can get rides to and from providers when necessary. You may have to call a Medicaid caseworker, a ride service, or another agency. That contact should: Help you decide if you have an immediate need for care; Make sure you are eligible for Medicaid;  Verify that you have an appointment with a Medicaid provider; Let Medicaid Give You a Ride 2 • Make sure that you have no other reasonable way to make it to your appointment; and • Decide what type of ride Medicaid can give you for your situation. Based on this information, your contact will either set up the ride you need or will tell you how to set up the ride yourself.
